The University of California San Diego is pressing criminal charges against three student workers for allegedly writing protest slogans on university buildings in  chalk and washable marker.  The students were arrested by UCPD at their homes earlier this month for allegations of felony vandalism and conspiracy and taken to the Central San Diego County Jail.

In addition, UC San Diego is trying to discipline and dismiss 67 student workers. The students, who work for the university as teaching and research assistants, had delivered a letter to the university chancellor protesting attempts to undermine the labor contract negotiated last December. The students have been charged with code of conduct violations and 8 of them have been placed on probation.

On Monday, July 10th, over 300 student workers from UC campuses across southern California rallied at the San Diego Central Courthouse at the arraignment of the three students facing criminal charges. They denounced the arrests as a blatant act of union-busting and an attack on free speech, and are planning further actions. KPFK’s Peter Racioppo attended the rally and spoke to some of the student workers.

Her father, the late Dr. George McElroy was a journalism professor at Texas Southern University and a founding member of the Black Press in Houston. He was also a columnist for the Houston Post, which is no longer in circulation.
