Russia held its regional elections earlier in September.  For the first time, residents of the Donbass, Zaporozhie and Kherson regions had a chance to participate in Russian elections. These are former Ukrainian territories whose majority ethnically Russian population voted to join the Russian Federation in 2022. Sebastian Salgado is an Argentinian journalist, film-maker, director of the independent outlet Data Urgente, and most recently an election observer in Russia. He spoke to Pacifica’s Polina Vasiliev.

New Jersey Senator Robert Menendez remains defiant despite federal indictment on bribery charges, some of which allege that he was paid to secure arms, arms financing, and influence for the Egyptian government. Pacifica’s Ann Garrison reports.

 The growing strike wave of UAW workers arrived in California with a strike at the Stellantis auto parts plant in Ontario, California. The strikers were joined by Teamsters and other workers in the Inland Empire. Thanks to Working Voices LA for recording.

Millions of workers may be working without being paid if the government is shut down and that includes thousands of Transportation Security Administration workers at US airports. Republicans are also demanding major cuts in social services, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration, US Department of Agriculture, and the Food and Drug Administration. Host Steve Zeltzer interviewed Gilbert Galam, political and legislative director of the American Federation of Government Employees Local 1230, the union of workers at the Transportation Security Administration.

While most people in the United States viewed California as a non-slave state, that was not the case according to labor historian Jean Pfaelzer in her new book, “California, a Slave State.” She looks at the slavery of native Americans, Chinese sex workers, and slave labor today in prisons and other industries in California. She is also the author of “Driven Out,” a book about organized attacks on Chinese and Chinese Americans on the West Coast.
