Block Report‘s JR Valrey interviewed Lucas Guilkey, co-director of The Strike, a documentary about solitary confinement in the California Prison System, prison segregation, and the prisoners’ strikes of 2011 and 2013. We talked about the history of prison gang validation, as well as the non-hostility pact that was established between prison gangs in 2012. They talked about the rise of solitary confinement coinciding with the rise of mass incarceration in the ’80’s and 90’s. We also discussed the history of Pelican Bay, security housing units, and supermax prisons. Lastly they conversed about the insightful new documentary, The Strike, which will be featured nationally on PBS in February.
