Pacifica’s Steve Zeltzer talked with Michigan UAW 160 GM auto worker Jessie Kelley, Canadian GM Unifor Local 222 member Tony Leah, and Detroit GM UAW 909 former president Frank Hammer about the trade war tariffs and its impact on working people. In honor of Women’s History Month, Pacifica’s WPFW producer-host of What’s At Stake and CRD contributor Fahima Seck remembers the extraordinary contributions of scholar-activist Dr. Andree Nicola McLaughlin with Dr. McLaughlin’s sister, Jo Ann McLaughlin, and Professor – Director emeritus Safiyah Bandele of the Center for Women Studies, Medgar Evers College, NYC.
Dr. Andree Nicola McLaughlin held the Dr. Betty Shabazz distinguished chair for social Justice @Medgar Evers college. She was the founder and coordinator of the International Black Women’s Cross Cultural Institute. Dr. McLaughlin was also among those students who took over Cornell University’s Willard Straight Hall in 1969, demanding Black studies for subsequent generations — which ushered in Dr. James Turner’s Africana Resource Center.
Dr. McLaughlin joined the realm of the ancestors on December 4, 2024. May she rest in power for a job well done.
