Last week Trump’s ally and Argentina’s president Javier Milei suffered a crushing electoral defeat when the Argentinian parliament overturned his veto of bills to increase funding to education and healthcare. This led to a panic in the Argentine stock market. Trump and his Treasury Scott Bessent have announced they will give Milei a $20 billion loan to prop up his government before the elections in October. University of Buenos Aires professor and Argentine Workers Party member Guillermo Kane talked with Pacifica’s Steve Zeltzer about the electoral defeat and whether Milei can recover.
