University of California San Francisco healthcare workers joined supporters of Palestinian medical workers at the UC Regents meeting on July 15, 2026, at the UC San Francisco Mission Bay campus. They called for the release of Dr. Hussam Abu Safiya, director of Gaza’s Kamal Adwan Hospital, who has been held by Israeli authorities since his arrest on December 27, 2024. Supporters say he has been tortured and that his health has severely deteriorated.
The Palestinian Physicians Syndicate and Doctors Against Genocide organized a global day of action demanding the release of Dr. Abu Safiya and more than 400 other detained Palestinian healthcare workers. Organizers say these detainees have been subjected to torture and inhumane conditions in Israeli prisons. Demonstrators also protested what they described as the UC Regents’ and UC administration’s collaboration with the Israeli government.
During the rally, physician and professor Rupa Marya addressed the crowd by phone. The University of California fired her after she publicly criticized Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and UC’s relationship with Israeli institutions. She also discussed criticism directed at her by San Francisco State Senator Scott Wiener, who is running for Congress. Marya also criticized UAW Local 4811, which represents about 60,000 University of California workers, for supporting Wiener’s campaign.

In a hastily called State Department Ministerial on the Resurgence of Political Terrorism, the deeply reactionary Trump administration assembled representatives from over 60 invited countries to sign up for the launch of an ominous campaign of political, legal, and financial warfare against so called “far left terrorism.” Deputy Chief of Staff Stephen Miller announced that Trump’s National Security Presidential Memorandum 7, signed last September, allowed the administration “to disrupt, identify, defund, debank, arrest, and prosecute these political terrorists that are operating in this country.”
We share Caitlin Johnstone’s responsive commentary titled, “They are Launching a New COINTELPRO for the 21st Century”. Tim Foley reads the piece.
CRD will continue to cover the resurgence of this ominous government Counter Intelligence Program that purposely, hyperbolically, and hypocritically conflates constitutionally protected political speech and action with domestic terrorism. More to follow in the coming weeks and months.
