Since 1970 Indigenous People & their allies have gathered at noon on Cole’s Hill in Plymouth, Massachusetts to commemorate a National Day of Mourning on the US Thanksgiving holiday.

It’s no holiday for Indigenous people to whom Thanksgiving Day represents the genocide, theft and the erasure of Indigenous cultures. Capitalism, Racism and Democracy honors Indigenous ancestors and Native resilience with this presentation from a National Day of Mourning speech in 2012  by Annanwon Weeden who is Mashpee Wampanoag.  He spoke about the reality of Thanksgiving while  holding  a mounted fake bloody head on a spike.

The National Day of Mourning is a day of remembrance and spiritual connection, as well as a protest against the racism and oppression that indigenous people continue to experience worldwide.

On Monday November 20th, workers in Osaka, Japan who are members of the Minato Godo Shoichi Union’s Metals Branch launched a one day strike for higher wages and to defend Palestinians from an ongoing genocide in Gaza. It was the union’s first strike in decades. Students who were supporting the strike spoke out. There was also an international rally in Tokyo, where workers talked about the growing economic crisis. Pacifica’s Steve Zeltzer covered these events on the ground in Japan.

A recent report titled “Report on Reparations for Transatlantic Chattel Slavery in the Americas and the Caribbean” concluded that under international law slaving nations owe staggering sums.

The analysis, known as the Brattle Report, estimates that the global cost of the slave trade could be as high as $131 trillion US dollars, both for harm perpetrated during the slave era and damages caused post-enslavement.

We share a presentation by Attorney Nkechi Taifa, host of Equal Rights and Justice Radio on WPFW.

And that concludes today’s edition of Capitalism, Race & Democracy. We thank all of Pacifica’s sister stations and affiliates who contribute to the production of this show. Today’s program was produced by the Capitalism, Race, & Democracy collective with contributions from Fahima Seck, Jacquelyn Battise, Akua Holt, Steve Zeltzer, Freddy Libertad, Polina Vasiliev, and hosted by Ann Garrison.
